How to Stop Overthinking Everything

Overthinking is not a sign of intelligence or care. It is anxiety dressed as productivity. The person who deliberates for four hours has not made a better decision than the one who took twenty minutes โ€” they have simply suffered longer.

Why This Matters

Set a decision deadline. Small decisions: two minutes. Medium decisions: 24 hours. Major decisions: one week. When time is up, decide with what you have. This sounds simple. In practice it is transformative.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Name what is happening when it happens. When you notice your mind spiralling, say to yourself: I am overthinking. This tiny act of labelling creates a gap between you and the thought that makes it slightly easier to step back.

A Practical Approach That Works

Ask yourself: will this matter in five years? The vast majority of things we agonise over will be completely irrelevant in five weeks, let alone five years. This question provides immediate perspective.

Final Thoughts

Action is the antidote. When you are overthinking you are stuck in your head. The solution is always to do something โ€” however small โ€” that moves you forward. Even imperfect movement breaks the loop.
